Conservation: philosophy![]() Traditional craftsmanship of high quality does exist but it often requires a different approach to that of building as fast and as cheaply as possible. It is vital to spend time discussing the project with the craftsmen, as very often they will be able to contribute ideas or expertise to the work in hand. Traditional buildings are often more flexible than the hard materials and rigid structures of today, and it is vitally important to allow for this. The International Council on Monuments & Sites (ICOMOS) is non-governmental organisation that sets standards in conservation throughout the world. In 1964 ICOMOS established the Venice Charter, which forms the basis of all modern conservation philosophy and techniques. In my projects, I attempt to adhere to the ICOMOS guidelines, which stress the need to understand the setting and behaviour of the building. Materials:
